Glen is a veteran who was in Desert Storm and returned home after being wounded and losing his fellow soldier and best friend. The survivor’s guilt along with the repeated nightmares and other issues were too much for him. Although he went to the Veterans Administration and received medication, the medication wouldn’t dull the pain. He took matters into his own hands and began self medicating by using street drugs.
Glen’s life just continued to spiral out of control as he searched for different ways to cope. He was in and out of mental wards and jails on a regular basis. Glen finally got to the point where he wanted to end his life. He attempted it, but couldn’t go through with it. But, he had had enough of the life he was living. He gave his drugs away, and went into a treatment program. The treatment program referred him to Narcotics Anonymous meetings after graduating from their program. Glen decided to go, it was the only thing he hadn’t tried. At this NA meeting, Glen finally encountered people who used to get high, but had now overcome the misery of chasing that high. He kept going to meetings, one day at a time.
That was 14 years ago, and Glen is still going to meetings and still clean.
That is why Glen founded Charlotte Area Clubhouse. To help others experience the new life and purpose living in recovery brings. Stories like Glen’s are heard throughout the meetings held at the Clubhouse. Stories of pain and hope. These meetings provide a community of support and wisdom.
